As a music producer, Oliver Grey, has seduced listeners with his versatility, attention to detail and infectious beats. Drawing inspiration from all sources of music, he has an eclectic style guided by the intersection of what he refers to as “aggression and passion.” Heavy drums, ambient breaks, crazy synthesizers, and soul filling melodies are what he hopes will draw in listeners. “It’s energy in motion” and the the music world is starting to take notice.
Oliver Grey, born Mikhail O. Johnson on July 1, 1987 in Murray, Kentucky, experienced a troubled upbringing and was not privileged with a steady home. As a young adult, he was forced to live in different states, moving from shelter to shelter and often struggled tirelessly to make ends meet. Poor choices as a young adult landed him in jail, further sustaining a hopeless situation. All dreams of music stardom fading, Oliver Grey found inspiration. He found grace within himself. Once released from incarceration and with an elevated outlook on life, he began to believe again. Oliver Grey found peace when he discovered music and it became his outlet. It allowed him to channel his inner turmoil and fuel his musical imagination.
Oliver Grey’s musical influences have deep roots with the sounds of Super Producers, Dr. Dre and Timbaland, but he has not limited his musical taste to just Hip-Hop. Rock and heavy metal groups like Rage Against The Machine, Rammstein, Styx, Queen, Linkin Park have also made an impression. As far as what’s currently in rotation, Oliver Grey has the attention from Glitch Mob, Skrillex, Danja, and The Justice Leauge, just to name a few. “I tend to draw a lot of inspiration…from, well, me. I hear a sound and it sticks.” Without a doubt, Oliver Grey came into contact with some influential people who helped guide him into his music career. A self-taught music man, he was never formally trained in the skills that he currently use to make music. He credits being introduced to the clarinet as a young boy which helped him find a love for creating beats. “I have found tips here and there on the internet, and shared skills with producers but networking was key.” An introduction with producer Bryant “Koncept” Walker, who is the second half of “The Hitservice,” formed by his mentor Julian “Epik The Dawn” Council, is just one of the many benefits from the creation of these contacts.
Oliver Grey boasts accolades which include landing a major TV placement, working with Grammy nominated producers such as Tunde Akinwande (aka Breed, Newbreed) who he recently co-formed the production duo “The Bravo’s,” producing five full albums, and signing a production deal. He has also produced a record with the late legendary singer Donna Summer featuring Hip-Hop artist O’Mega Red, produced a song called “Eye Tag” by an artist named Phreshy featuring Trey Songz. Despite his darkest moments, Grey has crafted a future for himself that shines brighter every day. With his multicultural background, Oliver Grey has affirmed his capabilities of producing music for every type of genre.
Without question, Oliver grey’s talent grows more prolific with every record he composes, and his abilities seem to have no limit. “I believe that the people who are meant to hear my music, and need to hear it, will naturally hear it. I put my whole being, my soul into my music. It is, for me, healing, a way of therapy, and I have seen its therapeutic effects on others for myself. Expect amazing, and don’t be surprised when you get more. I am Oliver Grey.”
